Record your screen for the first time

The three macOS permissions Viddy needs, how to choose what to capture, and what happens when you stop.

25 seconds, no sound. Everything in it is written out below.

Step by step

  1. 1

Open Viddy on your Mac and press Sign in. Google sign-in opens in your browser so your existing accounts are available, then sends you back to the app.

  2. 2

Grant the permissions macOS asks for

Until they are granted, the recorder shows a card headed Grant permissions to record with a row for Screen recording, Camera and Microphone. Press Enable on each row. Camera and Microphone only appear if you have those toggles switched on.

  3. 3

    Relaunch after granting Screen Recording

macOS only applies Screen Recording after the app restarts. Use the Relaunch after granting button on that same card. Camera and Microphone apply straight away, with no restart.

  4. 4

    Choose what to record

The tabs at the top are Screen, Window and App. Screen captures a whole display. Window captures one window, and App captures one application, so the rest of your desktop is not in the recording. On the Window tab there is a Find a window box for searching the list, and a refresh button because the list goes stale as you open and close things.

  5. 5

    Set Camera and Mic

The two toggles under the source list are Camera and Mic. Camera adds a floating bubble on top of your recording. With Mic on, a level meter next to it shows sound arriving. If nothing is reaching the mic, Viddy warns that no sound is reaching it and you can pick a different microphone from the list below.

  6. 6

    Press Start recording

The red Start recording button becomes available once the permissions are granted and a source is selected. While recording, the button turns into Stop with the elapsed time beside it, plus a Pause button, and buttons to mute the mic or mute everything.

  7. 7

    Stop, and get the link

Stop saves the recording. What happens next depends on the upload mode you picked, which the next guide covers. When it is online, the recorder shows the link with a copy button and an open-in-browser button.

Worth knowing

  • Pausing removes that time from the recording. Muting does not: muted stretches are saved as silence.
  • Recording with the mic off produces a recording with no sound, and Viddy warns you before you start.
  • Window and app capture need the capture helper. If your build does not include it, only the Screen tab is available.
