Keyboard shortcuts

The four recording shortcuts that work from any app, and how to change them.

23 seconds, no sound. Everything in it is written out below.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Start/stop recording: Command Shift R

Starts a recording with whatever settings the recorder currently has, and stops and saves a running one. You do not need to bring Viddy to the front.

  2. 2

    Pause/unpause: Command Shift P

Paused time is left out of the recording, so the result has no gap where you paused.

  3. 3

    Mute/unmute mic: Command Shift M

Mutes your voice. Muted stretches are saved as silence rather than removed, so the timing of everything else stays put.

  4. 4

    Mute/unmute everything: Command Shift U

Mutes the mic and the call audio together, for total silence.

  5. 5

    Change one

Open Preferences with Command comma, then look under Video shortcuts. Click the shortcut you want to change and press the new keys. The combination has to include at least one of Command, Option or Control. The X next to a shortcut removes it, and Reset to defaults puts all four back.

Worth knowing

  • If another app already uses a combination, Viddy tells you and keeps the previous one.
  • These are system-wide shortcuts, which is why they work while you are in another app.
  • The app menu has its own shortcuts as well: Command N for a new recording, Command L for Videos, Command comma for Preferences and Command Q to quit.
